X ditches ‘misaligned’ creator revenue sharing programme

X (Twitter)

The programme will be replaced by a new rewards scheme that focuses on original content from X creators and influencers.

X (formerly Twitter) has ditched its “misaligned” revenue sharing programme in favour of the new rewards scheme for creators and influencers.

The Elon Musk-owned social media platform will soon stop accepting new Revenue Sharing members – although the programme will continue allowing existing participants to earn money through it until 7 September, 2026.

From then on, users will be able to apply for the new Original Content Rewards programme.

To quality, users must subscribe to one of X’s premium tiers, and have at least 500 verified followers, as well as 500,000 home timeline impressions (from verified users in 90 days).

Allegra Jacchia, senior product manager at X, confirmed the revenue sharing programme in its current form has “reached a point where its incentives were misaligned”.

The emphasis in the new programme is being placed on original content. Creators who posts include analysis, news, videos, photos, and commentary will be rewarded under the scheme.

Although the platform warned: “If your content regularly incorporates material created by others, you’ll need to contribute meaningful original value for it to qualify under our original content guidelines.

“The best content on X doesn’t stop at resharing what already exists — it adds something new. X has always been powered by people who share what only they can: breaking news, expert insights, firsthand experiences, and commentary that moves culture forward.”

Examples of posts that will not qualify for the rewards programme include content copied exactly from another account; content downloaded from another account and re-uploaded onto X; and content reposted without ‘meaningful transformation’, such as those posted with attribution, but without significant commentary and those that only add summaries, which are purely descriptive.

This new programme comes after previous attempts to reform X’s creator revenue sharing, including a reduction to clickbait accounts, although some of these were later reversed by Musk.
